Welded Steel Grating

Our most economical steel grating products, type "W" Welded Steel Gratings are manufactured by forge welding rectangular bearing bars and drawn cross bars. This welding process provides a positive fused connection providing years of service under the most demanding conditions. Type 19-W-4 steel grating is our most popular product and is recommended for nearly all industrial flooring applications. With nearly 80% open area, 19-W-4 allows for the easy passage of dirt, debris, snow and liquids and is essentially self-cleaning.

Pressure Locked Steel Grating

This kind of steel grating have deep rectangular cross bars and are manufactured by inserting pre-punched bearing bars and cross bars into an “eggcrate” configuration and deforming the cross bars under intense hydraulic pressure. The deep cross bars on type gratings make them popular for architectural applications such as sun shades and infill panels with the deeper cross bar serving as a distinct architectural accent.

Swage Locked Steel Grating

This steel gratings are manufactured by inserting hollow tube cross bars into pre-punched holes in the bearing bars and swaging the cross bars forming a positive mechanical connection. The cross bars are recessed below the top surface of the bearing bars providing a uniform and attractive architectural appearance. Swage locking is a particularly efficient process for the production of close mesh gratings.

Legend: U = Safe Uniform Load (lbs./ft.2); C= Safe Concentrated Load (lbs./foot of grating width); D = Deflection (inches).
For serrated grating, the depth of grating required for a specific load is 1/4" greater than in the table.
Notes: The carrying capacity of a piece of grating subjected to a concentrated load over only a portion of its width is determined by the stiffness of both the bearing bars and the cross bars, and therefore differs with the type of grating used. To determine the carrying capacity of gratings subject to such loadings, the manufacturer's engineering department should be consulted. 1/4" is considered the maximum deflection consisent with pedestrian comfort, but can be exceeded for other loading conditions at the discretion of the engineer.
F=18,000 psi, E=29,000,000 psi (For ASTM 1011/A 1011/M SS GR36 Type 1, F=20,000 psi and tabular values for U, C, and D shall be multiplied by 1.11) All loads and deflections shown are based on engineering computations using gross sections and nominal sizes of bearing bars. The values listed are for design selection only and are not intended to be "absolute" since actual load capacity will be affected slightly by variations which can beexpected due to material and manufacturing tolerances.
Conversion Factors:For gratings with other than 1-3/16" bearing bar spacing, or for different design stresses, proportionate conversion factors apply. Refer to the Metal Bar Grating Engineering Design Manual for the development of such factors.

Technical Information

Steel Bar grating offers the ideal combination of strength, long-term reliability, safety and economy. It consists of a series of bars enjoined to perpendicular crossbars at predetermined intervals to create a strong, sturdy weight-bearing panel. While welding is the most common method used for manufacturing bar grating, it can also be press-locked or swaged-locked.


Heavy-duty bar grating is available for applications that require maximum strength. Bar grating is manufactured from high-quality materials including aluminum, carbon steel and stainless steel.
